Proposal for a Heraldic Coat of Arms of the Republic of Macedonia

Heraldry

At the session held on 5.12.2014, The Government of the Republic of Macedonia adopted a draft-law on new coat of arms of the Republic of Macedonia. The proposed coat of arms is heraldic and contains a red lion on a golden shield, with a five-towered mural crown.

The proposal is based on the heraldic history related to Macedona, starting with the coat of arms from the Jérôme de Bara’s armorial from 1581, through the armorials of Pavao Ritter Vitezovic (1694) and Hristofor Zhefarovich (1741).

The golden mural crown, adorned with rubies and perls, symbolizes the republican organization of the state.

The new coat of arms shoud restore country’s historic symbols. The current coat of arms is designed according to the one of the former USSR, which was a model for all Soviet Republics. Republic of Macedonia and Belarus are the only European countries that still use emblems inspired by the former USSR heraldry.

With the adoption of the proposed coat of arms, Republic of Macedonia will join the family of European countries that care for both its past and future, promoting unity and attaching to a symbol that bears no division on any grounds, but rather creates unity of all who live in it, the draft-law reads.
